Cancún sells the Yucatán by the day trip.
Almost nothing worth seeing is in Cancún itself, and that is the point: the hotel zone is a departure lounge for cenotes, reef, ruins and island sails. Pick the run, not the resort.
Mexico City eats late and starts with Frida.

Oaxaca cooks slowly, then climbs Monte Albán.
The valley is one long lesson in patience: mole that takes a day, mezcal that took eight years in the ground, a hilltop city the Zapotecs levelled by hand. Give it three days and eat at every stop.

Beaches and pyramids exist elsewhere. Flooded limestone caves, masked wrestlers and smoked agave spirit belong to this country and nowhere else.
The Cenotes
The Yucatán has no rivers. Rain drains straight through the limestone into a flooded cave system, and where a roof collapsed you get a cenote: cold fresh water, fish, roots hanging through the hole in the ceiling. The Maya read them as doorways and dropped offerings in. Bring nothing on your skin — most operators rinse you before you go in, because sunscreen kills the water.

Lucha Libre
Masked wrestling is a hundred years old here and treated as theatre, not sport: heroes, villains, families in the cheap seats shouting things you will be glad you did not understand. Mexico City’s Arena México runs its big cards on Friday nights, with smaller houses on Tuesday and Sunday. Cameras are usually fine; the mask you buy outside is expected.

Mezcal
Tequila is one region’s blue agave, steamed in ovens. Mezcal is any agave, roasted in a stone pit under wood and earth, which is where the smoke comes from — and a wild espadín takes the better part of a decade to be worth cutting. June to October is the wet half of the year on both coasts: hot mornings, a hard hour of rain in the afternoon, then everything steams. Nothing on this list cares. Cave rivers, cenotes, market kitchens and tasting rooms are all better with the weather shut outside.
